Frequently Asked Questions

At Cove Concepts, we know that building a new cabin, sauna, garage, or kitset home is a big decision. Our FAQ page is designed to give you the clarity and confidence you need before starting your project.

What is included with the cabin?

Everything you need to build the cabin except the foundations and tools! All wall timber, ceiling and floor timber, doors and windows, fasteners, asphalt tiles, etc.

What is your warranty?

5 years manufacturers warranty. Our warranty only covers cabins/sheds that have been completely painted, with a minimum of 3 coats (1 coat primer/ 2 finishing coats) on any timber surfaces including, but not limited to Doors, Windows, Walls, and Fascia. The LRV value of the external paint, varnish or stain must be 40% or higher for the warranty to apply*. (Light Reflective value – check with your paint supplier. Avoid darker paints as this attracts and retains heat, and could cause the timber to crack/buckle/deteriorate over time).

How should I finish/treat the shed exterior?

If you want the traditional “wood look, recommend CUTEK® Euro or if you want a coloured finish, a quality exterior paint of your choice is all you need.

Do you offer installation?

Yes and No. This depends on your location. We do have some great contacts that we can put you in touch with who offer full builds.

How long does it take to assemble?

Of course, this depends on the size of the cabin or shed, skill level/competence and how many helpers you have. Up to 10m2 should be achievable over a weekend (providing that the foundations are ready) Allow 3 days for up to 20m2 and 6-12 days for the largest in our range.

What type of foundation is required?

This will vary based on your building site such as sloping/flat, if your cabin has a porch, etc. Generally a post and timber foundation made form treated timber is most common. Concrete pads are also widely used. It also depends if you want to insulate under the floor too.

Can I install other roofing materials?

Yes, around 80% of our sheds have the standard asphalt tiles installed but they can easily be upgraded to coloursteel. Speak with us for options or your local building merchant or roofing contractor.

Can I add extra insulation?

Depending on the wall thickness of your chosen cabin, wood is an excellent insulator for the walls from 44mm and up. Thinner 28mm could be considered as a “gardenhouse” or “sheshed” where they are mainly used in the summer months. You can definitely install insulation under the floorboards at time of construction. For ceiling insulation, we can offer a 50mm construction foam with a good R rating. It also softens noise from rain etc. This can also work with coloursteel roof upgrades.

Can I add power and water?

Absolutely, but check your local council regulations firstly. Power is easily added by using conduit. When you add water (bathroom/kitchen), your local council may classify this differently, so do check first.

Is the timber treated?

This may depend on the cabin that you have purchased. Generally, we prefer to sell sheds and cabins with the base timber treated, but the walls and ceiling untreated. This means your base is protected from rot etc. Treatment in NZ is toxic and also causes the timber to buckle and split later in life, so we prefer to sell untreated where possible. We can guide you on the best paint choice to protect the shed from rot etc

Does this require council consent?

Please check with your local council but generally buildings under 30m2 do not require consent, provided they do not have water or cooking facilities. This will change up to 70m2 soon. You may need to notify your council of the build, and have it signed off by a registered tradesperson/LBP, but your council will be able to advise you of the procedure. Some distance to boundary and height restrictions may apply to larger cabins.
